Otto Piene (*1928 in Laasphe, Germany and died 2014 in Berlin, Germany) became particularly known for his light-kinetic works (the “light ballet”), which represent an attempt to reconcile modern technology with nature. He is considered a pioneer in light and fire art as well as in sky-art-actions. Light and shadow are essential elements in Piene’s work. Through experimenting with the artistic potential of light, movement, and space, he created impressive light-kinetic pieces, such as his famous light ballets, fantastical air and light sculptures, and the sky events he orchestrated. In addition to his light-based works, Piene was deeply engaged with the element of fire, creating fire and smoke paintings that leave traces of flames and smoke. These works remain a central focus of his artistic output to this day.
Some of his solo and group exhibitions include the documenta II, documenta 3, and documenta 6 in Kassel; Westphalian State Museum for Art and Cultural History, Münster; São Paulo Biennale; Retrospective at the Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf; Kunstmuseum Celle with the Robert Simon Collection; Retrospective at the Museum am Ostwall in Dortmund; Leopold-Hoesch Museum in Düren.
