Biography

Toni Schmale (*1980 in Hamburg, Germany) played from 1986-2002 in the German football league and was part of the Women’s national football team. She has had various projects of art exhibited in public space, such as gefährt*innen in the Belvedere (Vienna/AT, 2023), zugbrücke (Burg Mauterndorf/AT, 2022), Tanke 24/7 (Vienna/AT, 2021) and In the Still of the Night (Vienna/AT, 2015).

Solo shows of her work include the Kunstraum Dornbirn (AT, 2024), basis e.V. ( Frankfurt/DE, 2024), Mayday (Basel/CHE, 2022), Secession (Vienna/AT, 2017), Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art (Gateshead/UK, 2017), nGbK (Berlin/DE, 2015) and participated in group shows at Albertina Modern (Vienna/AT, 2024) Kunsthaus Graz (AT, 2023), Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb (HR, 2022), Kunstverein Bielefeld (D, 2022), Belvedere 21 and mumok (Vienna/AT, 2023, 2021, 2017), MAK (Vienna/AT, 2020), transit/sk (Bratislava/SK, 2018), Kunsthalle Tübingen (DE, 2018), Kunsthalle Vienna (AT, 2017, 2023), MUSAC (Leon/ES, 2015), Museum der Moderne (Salzburg/AT, 2014), Museum Ludwig Cologne (DE, 2006) and others. Toni Schmale participated at Kyiv Biennale (Vienna/AT, 2023), RIBOCA3 (Riga/LV, 2022), 3rd Industrial Art Biennale (Labin/HR, 2020), 56th October Salon, Belgrad Biennale (SRB, 2016), Kyiv Biennale (UKR, 2015) and the Moscow International Biennale for Young Art (RU, 2014). Toni Schmale has received a.o. the Msgr. Otto Mauer Price (2017), BALTIC Artists’ Award (2017) and the Birigit Jürgenssen Price (2011). Her first an most recent solo show at Galerie Krinzinger, titled opferblech 2, took place in 2024.
