Lives and works in Rotterdam, Netherlands
Erik van Lieshout (*1968 in Deurne, Netherlands) is a Dutch visual artist. He studied at Ateliers ’63 (1991-1992) and exhibited internationally. Raised as a son of two social workers and activists in the 1970’s – travelling with his parents from one demo gathering to the other – Van Lieshout works in a variety of disciplines, mainly with uncompromising video installations and drawings, in which he often combines the political with the personal. His videos make use of stop motion animations and a close to documentary style. He works with embarrassment and humor, often stepping into the satirical with his direct approach to human society and its many ambivalencies.
Selection of his most resent exhibitions include: Manifesta 9 – Koolmijn van Waterschei-Genk, Genk (BE), group, 2012, La Biennale di Venezia, Arsenale,Venice (IT), group, 2013, delegierte Performance for WWTBD, Marien Jongewaard at Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna, (AT), solo, 2013, Manifesta 10, Hermitage-General Staff Building, St. Petersburg (RUS), group, 2014, S.M.A.K. – Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst, Ghent (BE), group, 2015, Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien und Caritas&Du, Vienna (AT), group, 2015, Kunsthaus Zürich, Zürich (CH), group, 2015, De Hallen, Haarlem (NL), group , 2015, Thessaloniki Biennal (GR), group, 2015, Albertina, Vienna, (AT), group, 2015, Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna (AT) group, 2015,
