With “Attributes”, Christian Rothwangl presents his first solo exhibition at Galerie Krinzinger Schottenfeld. On display are works in an interplay of impulse-like sketches and slow, layered paintings.
Rothwangl’s creative process begins with abstract compositions that assert themselves against realistic figures. This contrast intensifies the emotional resonance, while details combine the abstract with the figurative.
The artist employs a selective figuration that allows the viewer to decipher the hints of human presence. Faces that emerge from the background, figures that are suggested rather than defined. This intended ambiguity invites a variety of perspectives and encourages a personal dialogue with the artwork. Narratives emerge immediately upon viewing. His works create a mystical unreality that raises questions and encourages viewers to develop their own impressions.
Christian Rothwangl’s paintings are characterized by a certain transparent application of paint, which blurs the boundaries between the individual layers. The artist’s decision to remove the paint with water upon applying it opaquely embodies a certain unforeseeability, which also involves a degree of risk, as this process leaves room for chance and unpredictability.
In the exhibition “Attributes”, Christian Rothwangl fuses abstraction and figuration and invites visitors into a universe rich in bizarre characters and unexpected associations.
