Lives and works in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Maha Malluh (*1959 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia) has turned her fascination for tactility into an essential feature of her work. Beginning first with a sense of comfort derived from touching familiar objects, the relationship with such objects developed so that she became estranged from them. These were objects which she once had a certain emotional attachment to, through memory, through use, through heritage. Yet as a result of spending several hours with them, she became concerned with how their functional purpose, the memories attached to them and their later obsolete, indifferent existence were constantly transformed and translated. It is playful toying with the serious issue of consumption and globalisation, whilst appreciating the aesthetic beauties of translated materials.

Her work centers upon the impact of globalization and consumer culture within her nation. “My inspiration for art comes from my country, a land of contrasting images and ideas. Good art…forces you to pause, to contemplate and think harder about your surroundings.”

Recently her work has been featured in several international solo and group exhibitions such as Venice Biennale – Edge of Arabia, Venice, Italy (2009), Just Des(s)erts – Selma Feriani Gallery London, UK (2012), Hajj, le Pèlerinage à La Mecque, Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris, France (2014), Champagne Life, Saatchi Gallery. London, UK (2016), Road to Heaven, Selma Feriani Gallery, Art Basel Miami, USA (2018). Her work is represented in collections such as Tate Modern. London, UK, Centre Georges Pompidou. France, MAK Museum, Austria, UBS Art Collections, International Greenbox Museum Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. She has been a part of multiple group exhibitions at Galerie Krinzinger since 2012.
